Magic when is upkeep




















Abilities that trigger at the beginning of upkeep go on the stack, and then players can play instants and abilities. Once that is done, both players may play spells and abilities.

Am I missing something? Untap, upkeep, then draw is indeed the order. Note that players do not receive priority to cast spells or activate abilities during the untap step. No player receives priority during the untap step, meaning that no cards or abilities can be played at that time. During the upkeep and draw steps, however, players can cast instants and activate abilities as normal. No the creature is not removed from combat and yes the creature will still deal damage as normal.

Creatures may be tapped or untapped after attacking and are not removed from combat. You cannot, however, do it before that ability gets triggered and goes on the stack, which is what messes up your plan. Shrieking Affliction is one of my personal favorites when it comes to the best upkeep cards.

For a single swamp land, this uncommon black enchantment causes each enemy player to lose 3 life if they have one or fewer cards in their hand. This rare Artifact comes into play for a reasonable price of 4 colorless mana and allows each player to play an extra land card each turn. The casting cost of this big bad boy is 5 colorless mana and 2 islands. Aethersquall Ancient comes into play with flying, and at the beginning of your upkeeps, you gain 3 energy counters.

Spend 8 energy counters anytime to send ALL creatures except for Aethersquall Ancient on the battlefield to the graveyard. Captive Audience is a deadly and diverse mythic rare black and red enchantment card. It costs 5 colorless mana, 1 swamp land, and 1 mountain. It is a perfect example of how well red and black work together. When Captive Audience enters the battlefield, you pick an enemy to enchant with it. For the more than reasonable price of 5 colorless mana and 1 single mountain, this card works well in pure red decks or multi-colored decks with a few mountains.

It is a cycle that can go on for the entire game if you are lucky. Keeper of Keys is a really great example of how versatile and well-balanced blue upkeep cards are. When Keeper of Keys enters play, you become the Monarch. If you are Monarch during your upkeep stage? This includes your Lands, Creatures, Artifacts etc. As Tapping is one of the cornerstones of MTG gameplay, having them untap means you can use them again. For example, tapped creatures cannot attack or block, and tapped lands are unable to tap again for mana.

It restricts you to untap only 1 land, hence it supercedes the general rule in your Untap Phase. Such cards that affect the very foundation of MTG rules make the game more complex. More often than not, players will be able to untap most of their permanents during the Untap Phase.

In most cases, nothing happens during Upkeep, but there are cards with an Upkeep cost. For example, cards like Peacekeeper requires you to pay mana, otherwise it will be sacrificed. Upkeep costs are not always negative. For example, Search for Azcanta allows you to Scry during your Upkeep, which will help you filter the card you draw in the next phase. This phase is very important as drawing cards gives you more options to play.

The Draw Phase lets you draw one card, and only one, unless certain card effects say otherwise. For example, Howling Mine forces players to draw an extra card during this phase. This can be good, but it can also be bad for you as opponents will also have more options.
