Support Us. Mental Health. National Apology: A significant day in Australia's history. We reflect on their past mistreatment.
A future based on mutual respect, mutual resolve and mutual responsibility. You might also like It was a significant day not just for our people but all Australians. Despite it taking over a decade for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to receive a formal apology from the Australian government after the tabling of the recommendation in the report, the date of 13 February holds poignant significance for indigenous peoples. National Apology Day is commemorated annually on 13 February and encourages remembrance of - and apology to - Stolen Generations and those whose lives have been blighted by past government policies of forced child removal and assimilation.
Saturday, 13 February marked the thirteenth anniversary of the National Apology. Both reminded those present, including members of the Stolen Generations, of that singular day 13 years earlier. SAHSSI would like to acknowledge this historical day and also let you know that our organisation, and our staff have embarked on our own Reconciliation Action journey because we believe that knowing the past is a healing journey. As a trauma informed organisation it is important for us to understand the ongoing impacts of colonisation and the intersection this has on our work supporting homeless Aboriginal people.
This means that over the next few years we will embark on a journey of deep listening, learning, yarning and sharing of one of the oldest continuing cultures in human history, that came so close to being forgotten.
